Developed
countries have plugged into the Internet and are reaping great benefits from
it while developing countries have recognised the importance of being
connected and are consciously trying to promote the use of it. But there
is a price to pay for development. Internet brings along with it a host
of problems such as hacking, copyright infringement and pornography.
There exists a widespread
public concern about Internet pornography. It is more difficult to
regulate Internet pornography than print or video pornography. Firstly,
it is because of the relative ease of accessing these sites. Anyone with
a computer and a modem can log on to the sites. Secondly, it is free and
thirdly, surfers can view these sites in the privacy of their own rooms
and retain their anonymity, which minimises the risk of being caught.
Some sites do not offer adult check and the sites that do, offer
only a very skimpy check, which does not really verify a user’s age.
Without adult checks such as credit-card age verification, children and
minors have been able to access these sites easily.
