Many negative statements have been made about pornography. Of the three
theories only the libertarian position supports the notion that pornography
may be beneficial. Using the psychoanalytical theory, pornography may
serve as a safety valve, or “catharsis” for potential sexual
deviants and offenders. Pornographic materials provide a way of
releasing strong sexual urges without causing harm to others. Public
opinion surveys conducted by the 1970 commission indicated that many
people agreed with this assessment. Consider another example—if the
viewing of erotica increases the sexual activity between a married
couple, can we say that pornography is a bad thing?
